Pop's Tart

Popovich on the Pau trade:
"What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension," said Popovich. "There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committee that oversees NBA trades. I'd like to elect myself to that committee. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade."

When told that Wallace had challenged executives to criticize the deal publicly, Popovich replied, "Well, there you go. I'm on the record."

Man I love Gregg Popovich (agape not eros, so stop right there). He is always good for a speaking-his-mind quote, and he's usually right. If I wasn't a Laker fan, I'd be pissed at that trade too. See: Garnett to Boston for a box of spare parts.

You Have to love Pop . But what's worse?

1. Making the Lakers a powerhouse while you're rebuilding(cleaning house) 3-4 years out at least. Not to mention this team is for sale, so a good move to give value and futures to potental buyers.

or

2. Tanking a season so you can draft Timmy to create the twin towers. They seriously shut down to move up in the lotto.

The Lakers pushed themselves into luxury tax with this trade, when at least one other team would not. It was reported that Memphis thought it had closed a similar deal with Chicago, but Chicago didn't want the salary. We love Gasol the player (especially since he replaces Kwame the Brick Handed), but he's got an O.K.-to- bad contract.

Add in the economics and its a more even trade, which you can't say for Boston.

San Antonio could probably trade for Ben Webber from their NBDL roster, and that would look criminal on talent alone. But they don't want the contract.

As far as the luxury tax, the Lakes seemed to always be fiscally responsible enough to keep under the cap. I think Buss doesn't mind the extra payroll if it means some serious runs at a ring. The compensation in ticket sales and merchandise has to make up for up for the few million he'll spend. Anyways, Buss could lose a million playing poker over a weekend and not flinch.

man it's stressful...we went from the pressure of sucking to the pressure of having to win it all.
